The gadget Freak
Yep, I’m a gadget freak as anybody who knows me will testify. I love anything tech related; if I find something that is a gadget & can be used for travelling (or I convince Alexa it can be used) then its often finds its way into the kit box.
After some health scares in 2008, I embarked on a road trip to Australia from the UK. Joining 40 complete strangers we started our journey through Europe and towards Asia in a converted truck with coach seats for us all. Several months in, I decided I wanted to try and do this independently so flew back to the UK from Nepal to look into how I could make this a reality. It was upon returning to the UK that I got sucked back into the normal Monday to Friday, 9 till 5 and before I knew it, 4 years had passed. Yes, we had ideas but we never pushed them forwards. Then one day I proposed the idea of joining the Mongol Rally.
The rally re-ignited our love for travelling. It reminded me how much I missed the open road and regret that normality can take over your life without you realising. Full of enthusiasm, we started planning our next trip but then, out of the blue, I was diagnosed with Undifferentiated Spindle Cell Sarcoma, a rare Cancer of the bone & soft tissue.
Not to be deterred, I set myself a goal to be travelling again within 12 months of being diagnosed. Cancer is awful & treatment is tough but I wasn’t about to be governed by it. If my consultants had told me to worry then I probably would have done, but until then, I believed I was going to get through it. I will never be 100% Cancer free but I do believe that a large part of a successful recovery is about mindset. Having a goal to work towards kept me positive as I was going to get back to something I love doing, driving on an open road with my camera to hand, to a place I can’t even pronounce the name of correctly.
Missing a bone in my leg hasn’t changed my perspective. If anything, it has continued to drive me more to experience & appreciate as much of this World as I can.
Every person can transform the world from one of monotony and drabness to one of excitement and adventure.
Now, to find what’s the latest motorbike hitting the market that can up for raffle as a percentage of all ticket sales goes to helping Sarcoma Uk as over 15% of all diagnosed childrens cancers are a variation of this type of Cancer (Ewings Sarcoma)
